Berlin has a rapid transit ring around the city center. (Apparently, lots of bigger cities have this – a friend of mine told me about the ring(s) in Beijing; if you live just outside of the ring in Amsterdam, your rent might be half of what your neighbors a few meters towards the city center pay.)
I hardly ever have to use it, but whenever I do, I’m annoyed. Normally, lines are defined by their number and their last stop. These lines however are simply called “Ring” which doesn’t help you at all in knowing which way you’re supposed to go. Today, I saw the two directions underneath each other for the first time and it finally all made sense. (Granted, you still need to know a bit about Berlin geography to know if you need to go clockwise or counter-clockwise but this already helped tremendously.)

I just went ahead and created a DIY tag. Ahahahhahh! Hah.
I’ve been meaning to grow fresh herbs in my kitchen for a while. Unfortunately, there is a constant lack of space and natural light in my apartment and they basically never coincide. I’m not a big fan of Pinterest (I know, I know…) but it introduced me to vertical gardens. So I went to the hardware store and bought seeds, soil, two metal chains (whoever thought a self-service metal-chain cutting station was a good idea?), little pots with handles, and a few metal hooks. (Apparently, they’re called butcher hooks? Ahum.)
The chains are not mounted in any way but merely lie on top of the cabinet, so the weight of the pots balance each other out. My attempts at hanging two pots simultaneously had a certain slapstick quality.

What do we have here? Left are the shade-loving balm mint, peppermint (which I had to buy as a whole plant), cilantro (YAY!), and wild garlic. On the right are basil, chives, parsley, and rosemary. I’m really curious how they’ll do.

I baked lime coconut olive oil cake for the farewell party for one of our student assistants. I really liked the combination of the fresh summer-y flavors, though the cake ended up a tad dry because I only had a large baking dish at hand. I can highly recommend this recipe, though – just make sure to check the doneness of your cake regularly! :)

I mentioned yesterday that I try to avoid going through the city by bike. Too many people and tram rails are just two tiny reasons for this. The best reason is this amazing park that lies between work and my place. When I tell people where I live in Potsdam (“West of the Havel, city center”) I usually forget to mention that I live right next to Sansscouci Park. It’s soooo beautiful! (Unfortunately the park closes by sunset (and it’s not really clear to anyone when exactly that is) and if you’re not out by then, you might be able to climb the fence… but what about your bike? So I only ever go through here in the morning and if I leave work at a reasonable hour. I can’t wait for summer!)

I took an unusual route to work to deliver some information brochures about my study to old people’s homes (I try to avoid going through the city because there are no bike paths and way too many tram rails.) I came across Waschbar which I had heard about several times but never knew where it’s located. It’s a laundromat and a hipster-ish cafe/bar. I will have to go there one of these days and see what all the rave is about.

I finally woke up my bikes from hibernation. The Dutch would probably laugh at how whiny I’ve become when it comes to biking (“It’s toooooo coooold!”, “It’s tooooo wet!”, “It’s too…. well, I don’t want tooooooo!”), so it’s about time. I have three bikes in my basement: the new Black Beauty, my beloved orange Tigger (which I’ve had since I was 12), and the little foldable Snowball II. I’m not using the basement for anything else at the moment, but instead stuff everything I don’t need in the little shed next to my balcony.

I found this waiting for me on my desk when I returned to work. :)
