Hi! Remember me? I’m supposed to post pictures on a daily basis but somehow February flew right by me. Work was hectic and crazy and disappointing and a little depressing. Private things were fun and exciting and blissful and definitely interesting. I took a few photos here and there, but I don’t like to think up memories from 10+ days ago. So I figured I’d use this entry as a largely uncommented pic dumb and start fresh in March – this time hopefully more in time. ;)

So this was February.

Before I moved, I made a serious point in getting rid of a ton of books and turned the majority of my library digital. Yet, I still had a bunch of very heavy boxes because… cookbooks. I love them and I’m always excited to buy a new one.
Cassie’s newest cookbook has been patiently waiting for me at the post office and I finally got around to picking it up today. It’s going to be a few weeks before we have a functional kitchen, but I’m looking forward to Goji Berry, Boconut & Dark Chocolate Truffles, Salmon Cakes, and the like.

Day 167

I just went ahead and created a DIY tag. Ahahahhahh! Hah.
I’ve been meaning to grow fresh herbs in my kitchen for a while. Unfortunately, there is a constant lack of space and natural light in my apartment and they basically never coincide. I’m not a big fan of Pinterest (I know, I know…) but it introduced me to vertical gardens. So I went to the hardware store and bought seeds, soil, two metal chains (whoever thought a self-service metal-chain cutting station was a good idea?), little pots with handles, and a few metal hooks. (Apparently, they’re called butcher hooks? Ahum.)
The chains are not mounted in any way but merely lie on top of the cabinet, so the weight of the pots balance each other out. My attempts at hanging two pots simultaneously had a certain slapstick quality.

What do we have here? Left are the shade-loving balm mint, peppermint (which I had to buy as a whole plant), cilantro (YAY!), and wild garlic. On the right are basil, chives, parsley, and rosemary. I’m really curious how they’ll do.

I went to Nijmegen which – of course – meant dinner with one of my best friends! These Chinese dumplings (spring onion and chicken) were as delicious as they look! :)

I’m not usually a fan of German cuisine (except for desserts – we rock at baked goods!) but there are some things I really like. Interestingly enough, they all hail from southern Germany (while I am from the north). I made Schupfnudeln with cheese and caramelized(-ish) red onions. Soooo good!

I gave my mom a tajine for Christmas, so we used it today for the first time. Soooo much good food!

(Oh man, sorry for the blurry shot. I took this pic before rushing out of the door and didn’t even check how it had turned out.)
Cassie from the at-times-hilarious, at-times-educational, but always super honest and down-to-earth blog Back To Her Roots (and The Broken Plow!) published her first cookbook. I’m not usually a fan of one-ingredient cookbooks but I love Cassie’s recipes and her writing style, so I bought this one anyway. And it just arrived in my mailbox today! The recipes look and sound absolutely delicious, so I can’t wait to try them out.
(Obvious blah: I was not paid to tell you about Cassie’s book or her blog and I paid for the book myself. ;))
