Hi! Remember me? I’m supposed to post pictures on a daily basis but somehow February flew right by me. Work was hectic and crazy and disappointing and a little depressing. Private things were fun and exciting and blissful and definitely interesting. I took a few photos here and there, but I don’t like to think up memories from 10+ days ago. So I figured I’d use this entry as a largely uncommented pic dumb and start fresh in March – this time hopefully more in time. ;)

So this was February.

I ate

It’s not a secret I sorta kinda like Oreos. I’m also a big fan of supermarkets in other countries. I found these strawberry-flavored Oreos in Nepal and there was no way I’d not bring them home. (Your average German supermarket sells only the regular kind and maybe chocolate cream Oreos, if you’re lucky.)
I finally opened the package today and they were not terrible. The smell is very chemical and the flavor is very standard artificial strawberry but that was exactly  I expected of them, so they did their job. ;)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Southern Germany has the best food! This includes Flammkuchen (which is technically French (maybe? Alsace is one of those regions that changed nationality quite often, so who knows what it was when they created tarte flambée.)), one of my favorite dishes. It’s a staple around here in fall, but just as good in the middle of winter.

My office mate spent much of the afternoon talking about how much he was craving pie, so I made him one.
The recipe is Serious Eats’s chocolate chip cookie pie, but I subbed the chocolate chips for white chocolate and the vanilla for lemon.

We don’t have a fridge yet, so all food that needs refrigeration lives on our balcony this week. (Winter in Germany means a few weeks around freezing point, which is very convenient right now.) Luckily, the balcony has a roof (which will also be great for tomato plants and my worms in the summer), so this works well.

Before I moved, I made a serious point in getting rid of a ton of books and turned the majority of my library digital. Yet, I still had a bunch of very heavy boxes because… cookbooks. I love them and I’m always excited to buy a new one.
Cassie’s newest cookbook has been patiently waiting for me at the post office and I finally got around to picking it up today. It’s going to be a few weeks before we have a functional kitchen, but I’m looking forward to Goji Berry, Boconut & Dark Chocolate Truffles, Salmon Cakes, and the like.

I promise this is the last food picture for a while. I spent the day preparing a presentation like a maniac. This extremely unappealing-looking but delicious bowl of noodle goodness from a tiny hole-in-the-wall in Friedrichshain provided a welcome break.
