I mentioned yesterday that I try to avoid going through the city by bike. Too many people and tram rails are just two tiny reasons for this. The best reason is this amazing park that lies between work and my place. When I tell people where I live in Potsdam (“West of the Havel, city center”) I usually forget to mention that I live right next to Sansscouci Park. It’s soooo beautiful! (Unfortunately the park closes by sunset (and it’s not really clear to anyone when exactly that is) and if you’re not out by then, you might be able to climb the fence… but what about your bike? So I only ever go through here in the morning and if I leave work at a reasonable hour. I can’t wait for summer!)

The cold front that hot northern Germany in late January was nowhere near as bad as the polar vortex (I think? I never bothered to convert temperatures) but it was… well, very cold. My parents and I went on a walk through their village – it was nice to get out but there is just a limit to how many layers you can put on. And if you’re still cold then, maybe you should just stay inside. ;)

Looks like I’ve become that lady. That lady who cuts up veggies for her worms. Well, full disclosure: a) It really is better to give them small pieces because the worms will only eat what is rotten (and of course a bigger surface area will help with that) and b) the broccoli and the cauliflower were not in any state for me to eat anymore. But still… maybe I should just plan to do my cooking on Mondays, when the veggies are still fresh.

Look at that, I got pets! My first overnight visitor brought me a jar of worms as a housewarming gift (much more appreciated than the usual bottle of wine, I tell you). Let me know, if you can think of cool names; so far, we got Fiona, Paula, Ken Lee, Dibidibidi Bou Choo-hoo-hoo (that’s one name), Shubidu, and HuiBuh.
An IKEA Samla box (fun fact: sammeln means ‘to collect’ in German) turned into their little worm hacienda. I have yet to figure out where they’ll live during the colder part of the year. Starting the worm bin meant a lot of fruit flies (not sure if this is normal), so they live in my little shed until the flies disappear (which is when I should probably bring them inside anyway because it gets too cold in the shed).

Not sure if this is a throw-away shot or not. My office mate and I have spent several evenings looking outside during the ‘golden hour’ (which is really more like 10 minutes at this point). We’ve certainly passed the time of the year when you can bike home when it’s still light (sadface), but at least it makes for a nice little break. Btw, the benches you see there? Yup, that’s the canteen. So good to know that food is never far away.
