Hi! Remember me? I’m supposed to post pictures on a daily basis but somehow February flew right by me. Work was hectic and crazy and disappointing and a little depressing. Private things were fun and exciting and blissful and definitely interesting. I took a few photos here and there, but I don’t like to think up memories from 10+ days ago. So I figured I’d use this entry as a largely uncommented pic dumb and start fresh in March – this time hopefully more in time. ;)

So this was February.

While I’m not following any team in particular at the moment, I love me a good game of whatever team sport is hip wherever I go. In my hometown, that’s usually handball or volleyball. My mom had tickets to a volleyball Bundesliga game, so we went and watched the Schweriner SC girls (yellow) win against Potsdam. Well done, girls!

I took the bus home to my parents’ place for my mom’s birthday. For many years, long-distance busses were prohibited (unless the bus operator could prove that their destinations were not sufficiently serviced by train companies), giving Deutsche Bahn the quasi-monopoly on mass land travel. In 2013, this ban was lifted and now Germans are happily chugging along in coaches that are cheaper (usually less than half the price) and more reliable than the train.

I got a front row seat and spent the bus ride watching Seinfeld. With Romanian subtitles. Because.

I wish I could have taken a better picture of this amazing b&b room. (Memo to self: pack fisheye lens, even if you think you won’t need it.) I’m so glad that I opted not to crash with friends this weekend because I would have hated to miss out on sleeping on this boat. Opoe Sientje lies (sits? floats?) in the Waal river in the center of Nijmegen, so that’s a location that’s hard to beat. They offer a number of wonderfully decorated and super cute rooms which are all unique, so there’s something for everyone. (Unless you’re into cold and simple decor, then… no.)

My parents and my aunt and uncle came to Nijmegen for my defense. The night before the big day, we had dinner at Vlaams Arsenaal. Such a nice place! My parents were baffled that even relatively fine dining includes a side of fries in the Netherlands (and, well, in Flanders), but they had to admit that they are just so much better than in Germany. Also, the beer menu was very impressive!

I’m spending the week leading up to my defense at the MPI guesthouse. Given that I lived here 3.5 years ago when I came to the Netherlands for the first time, it feels like I’m… closing a circle? Rounding the whole thing up? What’s the metaphor I’m looking for here?
In any case, I’ve got a relatively spacious double room all for myself, I can use the fancy internet here to prepare for my defense and I get to hang with a lot of my friends for a whole week. :)

A trip to my parents almost always includes going to a handball match. I get excited about most team sports but having been a goalie for 8 years when I was a kid, handball holds a special place in my heart. Its fast pace makes for an exciting time – this time, the Mecklenburg bulls scored the winning goal literally in the last minute. Well done, guys!
